Innovation, education and community are the building blocks of a sustainable, inclusive, prosperous society. Design and innovation are the unifying threads that link the building blocks and solutions to develop a better future world. One of Cape Town’s most dynamic design and innovation events, the Open Design Cape Town Festival, brings these concepts together.

Designing Careers for High School learners is the Premier Design Education showcase. From 2017 Designing Careers will be hosted at the magnificent concert hall/auditorium at the Cape Town City Hall

The programme includes:

  • Top national, local and international Tertiary Design Schools will present their schools and different study options available. See the confirmed list below
  • One Stop Design Shop: Top national, local and international Tertiary Design School Expo – showcasing a variety of study options and student work from different design disciplines. See the confirmed list below

The confirmed line-up of Iconic SA Designers include:

  • Internationally acclaimed SA architect Luyanda Mpahlwa (Design Space Africa responsible for the design of the famous
    10×10 Housing project)
  • Internationally acclaimed SA furniture and interior designer Haldane Martin who designed the Zulu Mama chair, the Songololo couch and the interior of Truth Coffee to mention a few
  • At age 26 Phumlani Nkontwana was listed by Mail & Guardian as one of the Top 200 Young South Africans to watch. He will talk about alternative careers important for future career seekers:  the importance and need of developing entrepreneurship in Africa, and the role creativity and complexity thinking plays in achieving success. 

  • JP Beukes is the founder and owner of OnePointZero, a bespoke interior design agency based in Johannesburg. Established in 1997, OnePointZero works with a wide range of clients spanning various sectors, providing turnkey solutions that include project management, implementation and project coordination. JP has been the recipient of numerous industry awards, including the 2004 Cube Award, the 2009 Loerie Award for Hotel de Ville and the 2015 Design is Global Award for groundbreaking work on Nando’s. “For me, great design has the ability to make someone realise and appreciate where they are in the world for that brief period of time,” says Beukes. “Interior design should be just enough to make you pause and appreciate where you are!”
